Modern Karelian Culture Shines at Kihaus Folk 2025

The Kihaus Folk Festival, held in Rääkkylä, Finland, from 27–29 June 2025, is a unique celebration of North Karelian music heritage, making it the only event of its kind in Finland. Now in its 34th edition, the festival highlights the theme ”Modern Karelian Culture”, blending tradition and innovation in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Värttinä Returns with a New Album in 2025

Widely regarded as the Crown Jewel of Finnish Folk Music, Värttinä will release a new album in spring 2025, marking over 40 years of pioneering Karelian vocal traditions. Known for their razor-sharp harmonies and dynamic stage presence, the band continues to bridge the gap between traditional and modern folk music.

In addition to their acclaimed catalog, Värttinä co-composed music for The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale, alongside Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale. The production has received glowing reviews and recently premiered in Sydney, Australia at the State Theatre on 7 January 2025.

Other Highlights of Kihaus Folk 2025

  • Loimolan Voima, the Folk Ensemble of the Year, presents hauntingly beautiful Karelian-language music with modern influences.
  • Finnish rock legends Miljoonasade bring nostalgic hits like Marraskuu and 506 ikkunaa to the stage.
  • Diverse performances by artists such as Vilma Jää, Cienna, Set’Akat, Hilja Grönfors, and Motari showcase the breadth of contemporary Karelian culture.

Karelian Culture on Display

The festival offers more than music, with workshops, panel discussions, traditional crafts, and culinary experiences. The Suuri Karjalaiskeskustelu (Grand Karelian Discussion) invites audiences to explore what Karelian culture means in today’s society.
