Malta’s tourism set to reach new heights

Malta’s tourism set to reach new heights

Malta is on track to exceed 3.5 million tourist arrivals in 2024, a significant increase on last year’s record of 3 million visitors. This represents a remarkable 30% increase on the pre-pandemic high of 2.7 million arrivals in 2019.

According to the National Statistics Office, 355,561 tourist arrivals were reported in October, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same month in 2023. This growth reflects Malta’s continued attractiveness as a tourist destination, especially during the autumn months.

The total number of overnight stays exceeded 2.2 million, an increase of 7.3% compared to October 2023. Of these, 87.1% were spent in rented accommodation, demonstrating the strong demand for Malta’s hospitality offering. The average length of stay for all inbound tourists was 6.2 nights. Tourist expenditure in October reached almost €356.5 million, an increase of 18.4 per cent compared to the same month last year. A remarkable 203,950 tourists, or 57.4 per cent of all visitors, included Gozo and Comino in their itineraries, underlining the popularity of these islands.

Malta continues to attract tourists with its mix of attractions, from UNESCO World Heritage sites and vibrant festivals to its stunning Mediterranean coastline and growing film tourism industry. Government and private investment in infrastructure, accommodation and attractions has helped to ensure that Malta continues to appeal. Renovations, new luxury offerings and the development of cultural landmarks such as MICA have enhanced the visitor experience.
