Joninės, or Saint John’s Eve   |   June 24, 2025

Joninės, or Saint John’s Eve, is a midsummer celebration that brings communities together around flickering bonfires. Marking the shortest night of the year, this festival is steeped in tradition and a sense of wonder. Revelers craft beautiful oak leaf wreaths and leap over flames as part of the festivities. Typically held outdoors, such as on  the  historic hill forts of Kernavė, the celebration  features  women  weaving garlands from grass and flowers, along with lively dancing and singing. As night falls, participants set out to search for the elusive blooming fern, believed to grant wishes. This day also coincides with the name day of two of Lithuania’s most popular names – Jonas and Janina.
