Habitare Collection celebrates its tenth anniversary – concepts selected for exhibition by the jury highlight the importance of the senses

Habitare Collection, a joint exhibition by Habitare and the Design Museum, is presented every two years at Habitare. The exhibition features international design products, chosen by a panel of experts, representing various facets of design from conceptual thinking to furniture design and industrial design. Habitare will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki from 11 to 15 September 2019.

Celebrating its ten years of existence, the exhibition will present selected highlights from over the years, while showcasing today’s most important products and concepts. The concepts chosen for the exhibition highlight the importance of sensory aspects in the design and use of the built environment. The exhibition design will be by the designer and interior architect SIO, Wilhelmiina Kosonen.

“This year, Habitare Collection celebrates its tenth anniversary, which is why Habitare and the Design Museum are inviting visitors to experience an impressive special exhibition, featuring classics and new designs from the collection”, says the director of the Design Museum, Jukka Savolainen. “The exhibition will feature, for example, the Plopp stool, designed by Oskar Zieta for the Danish company Hay, and the classic of Swedish game design, Mindcraft. The theme of recycling features prominently in the new designs exhibited, including Ioncell and products by Helsieni and Sulapac.”

The materials used for the exhibition stand are produced in cooperation with Kvadrat, a company that co-owns the Really company, which manufactures recycled textile boards. “We are pleased to be able not just to showcase a selection of designs but also to highlight the theme of recycling through the exhibition materials", says Savolainen.

“Habitare Collection has established itself as a major curated design exhibition that presents the most internationally interesting and current concepts and products, integrating them into Habitare. The inclusion of products in the permanent collection of the Design Museum ensures that the ideas are preserved and developed for future generations”, says the creative director of Habitare, Laura Sarvilinna.

The jury for the exhibition in 2019 includes the designer Alberto Alessi (chair); the director of the Design Museum, Jukka Savolainen; the chief curator of the Design Museum, Merja Vilhunen; the creative director of Habitare, Laura Sarvilinna; and the designer and interior architect SIO, Wilhelmiina Kosonen.

Habitare Collection was first featured at Habitare in 2009. New items will be added to the collection every other year, in conjunction with the Habitare fair. In 2009, 20 products were selected for inclusion in the collection, and in 2011, the number of additions was 24. This was followed by 33 products in 2013, and 15 products in 2017.
