Habitare celebrates anniversary and showcases the past and present of design at Messukeskus

Habitare, Finland’s leading furniture, design and interior decoration event, will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The highlights of the jubilee year will include reliving visitors’ memorable Habitare experiences and introducing new competitions and influencers in the industry. Habitare will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki from 9 to 13 September 2020.

Throughout its history of 50 years, Habitare has been reflecting Finnish design and the Finnish way of life. Since the early days, when the fair covered the entire spectrum of leisure time, the content has been narrowed down to focus primarily on design, with an increasingly international scope. In its jubilee year, Habitare will look back on the various stages of its history and explore the future of design.

“Over the decades, Habitare has influenced many generations of Finnish home decorators, and that is why we want to highlight the stories of our visitors and customers in the history of the event. For many businesses, Habitare has been a central place to launch the new products of the year, and for Habitare visitors, the event has been a place for dreaming and marvelling. We have heard that someone also found their future spouse at Habitare”, says the creative director of Habitare, Laura Sarvilinna.

In addition to the stories, the spotlight will be on the colourful history of the event as a trendsetter in Finnish design. On Habitare’s wall of history, visitors can study the way the event has changed over the years, including what the first Habitare fair, in 1970, was like.

The present and future of design will, in turn, be explored in Habitare’s many exhibitions and competitions. The Habitare Design Competition, and the Protoshop and Talentshop exhibitions, will highlight the emerging stars of design. The Habitare50 furniture design competition, co-organised with the furniture company Isku, will be seeking new innovative solutions for everyday life. The competition will be open on the Habitare website until 31 January 2020. The competition prizes altogether are €19,000.

“The 2020 Habitare theme, Art of Living, will celebrate Finnish design, its history, and its future prospects, which can rely on a strong tradition. In honour of this heritage, we would like to invite all design lovers to Habitare to celebrate the event together in September. We will co-create the programme content for the event with, among others, Design District Helsinki, and we will highlight Habitare exhibitor companies and their stories”, says Sarvilinna.
