Autumn interior decoration trends feature leisureliness, a restful atmosphere and round shapes

Community and sustainable development figure more and more prominently in interior decoration, while people seek peace and tranquillity in their home decor. The home is a place for people to wind down from their busy lives, and the decor reflects this, say the creators of Habitare’s trend exhibition Signals, the trend analyst Susanna Björklund and the designer Sisse Collander. Habitare will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki from 11 to 15 September 2019.

Signals is a versatile and experiential Habitare exhibition, presenting four social trends, which are reflected in the colours and objects selected for the exhibition.

“Signals is Habitare’s official trend exhibition, and our goal is to make visitors think and to provide them with an opportunity to be inspired by spaces and colours. Interior decoration trends show in the products and colours selected for Signals, but behind these trends you can also witness broader social trends and discussions about values”, says the trend analyst Susanna Björklund.

The trends selected for the Signals exhibition to be presented at Habitare are: The illusion of time; Water, the oldest medicine; Empathy and emotional data; and We all have our own bubbles. The four trends featured at the exhibition visualise emergent phenomena in today’s world, as they comment on, for example, climate change and the world’s water shortage.

“At the same time, we want to inspire visitors to come up with unconventional elements and solutions for their homes. Why do we think that our homes need to comply with the norm? How could our homes encourage us to be more present? We look at the world and our environment from our own subjective bubbles, and there is no single correct truth or single correct style of decor. We want to encourage visitors to combine trends and colours that they find interesting with things that are already present in their own lives. Perhaps rummage through your storage and bring back an item or two?” suggests Björklund.

In addition to social trends, what you can notice at Signals is that there is a shift in the colour scheme from bright candy colours to slightly more broken colours. Colours continue to play an important role, and their combinations do not shy away from contrasts. “This year, too, we have found pairs of colours that people may not be used to seeing together. Indeed, an old object or piece of furniture can get a new lease of life when paired with an unexpected colour”, says the designer Sisse Collander. Signals will also feature a small space-themed display, because the first moon landing took place 50 years ago.
