Sustainable experiences

We are pioneers in sustainability in the events industry

Certified quality

In 2009, Messukeskus became the first Finnish event organiser to receive the ISO 14001:2015 certification. We also have ISO 9001: 2015 certification, so we are certified to ISO 9001: 2015 management system standard.

Our environmental promise: 110% carbon neutrality by 2029

We will achieve our goal by reducing energy consumption, by increasing the share of renewable energy, and by recycling and making responsible purchases.

Solar power from the roof

A total of 1,589 solar panels were installed on the roofs of the Messukeskus complex in the summer of 2019. They produce 445 MWh of energy per year. This equals the amount of energy needed to make 2.3 million pots of coffee. The solar power plant was implemented in cooperation with Helen Ltd, and it will increase the share of renewable energy of our energy consumption. At the same time, the need for cooling will decrease, as the solar panels on the roof prevent the heat of the sun from reaching the building.

An energy-smart event centre

Messukeskus uses the latest building service technology: solar power, geothermal heating, district cooling, heat recovery and LED technology. Over the past ten years, we have reduced our water consumption by 50%, our heat consumption by 20%, and our electricity consumption by 15%.

The Energy Authority and Motiva awarded us with the accolade of being an energy-smart event centre in 2017. Our new energy saving programme aims for a significant further reduction in energy consumption by 2025.

99% waste reuse rate

All our facilities are equipped with recycling opportunities. The collection points in the exhibition halls are for sorting and recycling paper, cardboard, biowaste, timber, glass, plastic, metal and carpets.  An environmental supervisor offers assistance to our customers during assembly and disassembly.

Local food and organic coffee

We love food and don’t want to waste it! We prevent food waste in cooperation with NoHo Partners, the company responsible for our restaurant and catering services. We favour organic and local food in our catering for meetings. 85% of the ingredients we use are of Finnish origin. Our cafés serve coffee that has been roasted sustainably using green energy. Our coffee reduces the burden on the environment by generating no coffee waste.

“I participated in an event in the Siipi section of Messukeskus, and I was impressed with how accessible a listening environment Messukeskus is. The induction loop in the seminar facility worked like a charm. It was quick and easy to connect to with your own device, and the sound quality and reception were excellent. You seldom find such a high level of service in Finland. I appreciate it very much”

Together we can achieve more

Promoting good projects

Messukeskus provides a unique learning environment for students who need special support and for people with partial work capacity. We offer work opportunities in cleaning, in guiding visitors during events and helping them with mobility and auxiliary equipment and in serving as exhibitors’ replacements during breaks.

We also cooperate closely with UNICEF Finland. In 2019, cooperation between UNICEF Finland and Messukeskus enabled nearly 24,000 children to attend school for a year, or more than 2.3 million children to be vaccinated against polio.

Proud  to be a Sustainable Travel Finland company

In cooperation with our customers, we are building a better future for people and the environment. We sell special tickets to collect funds for the promotion of a cleaner Baltic Sea, and we are very proud to tell we have been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland by Visit Finland. This label is a sign of valuable work for sustainable tourism, and it brings more tools and a strong partner network to our long-standing responsibility work.

The Finnish Fair Foundation

One of the owners of Messukeskus, the Finnish Fair Foundation supports Finnish expertise by granting awards to successful and developing projects. The foundation grants around EUR 400,000 in awards to experts in various fields annually. Awards sponsored by the Finnish Fair Foundation include the Habitare Design award, the Finnish Quality Award, the Scientific Congress Power Player award and the new Doctor & Congress award, to name just a few examples.
