The Educa 2024 international programme to include keynote speeches on the effects of artificial intelligence on education and the future of education

Educa, the leading event in the education and training sector in the Nordic countries, will offer international education and training professionals a topical and high-quality programme in English. The themes of the programme include the effects of artificial intelligence on education, security and wellbeing, future teaching skills, and the green transition. Educa 2024 will be held at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre from 26 to 27 January 2024.  

The international programme of Educa 2024 will offer international education and training professionals a topical and high-quality entity, addressing global education challenges and highlighting aspects of the Finnish educational system. The event will also feature interesting companies that showcase the latest educational tools and solutions for international markets. 

The keynote speech on Friday 26 January entitled Generation AI: from AI Literacy to AI Agency, will be given by Teemu Roos, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Roos heads the AI education programme at FCAI, the Finnish Center for AI, and is the lead instructor of the popular Elements of AI online course. 

In his speech, Teemu Roos will discuss his Generation AI project, which identifies solutions that increase the resilience of children in coping with ongoing technological change, foster a mindset that considers cybersecurity concerns, and provide schools and teachers with the necessary insights and pedagogy for making curricular changes. 

On Friday, there will also be a discussion, entitled Policy Debate: Digital education and Artificial Intelligence, where Anna-Maja Henriksson, Minister of Education in Finland, and Kristina Kallas, Minister of Education and Science in Estonia, discuss how AI is transforming teaching and learning. How do Finland and Estonia see this change affecting their education systems? What opportunities and possible threats can AI bring? 

On Saturday 27 January, there will be a panel discussion, entitled The attractiveness of teacher education and profession. It will raise questions, such as: How do we ensure that we will have enough educated teachers in the future? In some countries there is a large shortage of educated teachers. What should be done that teachers would stay in the profession? 

Panellists of the discussion are: Howard Stevenson, Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, University of Nottingham; Hannu L.T. Heikkinen, Professor of Education, University of Jyväskylä; Petra Pulli, 6th year student, Educational Psychology, class teacher, University of Helsinki. Moderator is Christer Holmlund, Secretary General, Nordiska Lärarorganisationers Samråd, NLS. 

The Educa international programme will be presented on site Equity stage on 26–27 January 2024. Education professionals can also join the event and follow the programme through a virtual platform by registering online in advance. 

The programme is implemented in co-operation with the Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ), the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, Finnish National Agency for Education EDUFI and Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre.
